a student does not have a means <strong>of</strong> reliable transportation, they may take public transportation<br />
or arrange for private transportation if needed. Lack <strong>of</strong> transportation will not be accepted as<br />
an excused absence for non-attendance or tardiness at experiential or clinical rotations.<br />
HEALTH INSURANCE<br />
All students are required to provide documentation that they have health insurance. All<br />
Student Pharmacists (including international students) will be automatically enrolled in the<br />
university student health insurance plan each term. The policy is very basic, actual coverage is<br />
outlined in brochures available for pick up at the Student Health Center.<br />
1. Domestic pr<strong>of</strong>essional students can opt out <strong>of</strong> the university policy (International<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional students CANNOT opt out). To decline enrollment in the university<br />
health insurance plan he or she must do ALL three <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />
a. Have health history and up-to-date immunization records on file at the<br />
student health center<br />
b. Present a current valid health insurance card providing pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> health<br />
coverage<br />
c. Submit the online Waiver Form declining enrollment in the university<br />
plan<br />
(Please Note: All three criteria must be met in order to avoid being charged for insurance.)<br />
The cost <strong>of</strong> health insurance for domestic students is $48.00 per term, for international<br />
students $257.00 per term.<br />
LIABILITY/MALPRACTICE INSURANCE<br />
The School <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy purchases and maintains pr<strong>of</strong>essional liability/malpractice insurance<br />
for its students for claims and judgments arising out <strong>of</strong> their activities during the site<br />
assignment. Coverage shall be under the group insurance policy purchased by the <strong>Maryland</strong><br />
State Treasurer for health occupations students <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> public higher education<br />
institutions.<br />
What is Covered?<br />
Annual coverage is <strong>of</strong>fered from July 1 through June 31 <strong>of</strong> the following year, for malpractice<br />
liability throughout a student’s enrollment in the Doctor <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy program. This includes<br />
under the definition <strong>of</strong> malpractice ‘error, omission, or negligence’ in the performance <strong>of</strong> duties<br />
as a student in all IPPE and APPE experiential and service learning activities. Students in the<br />
Doctor <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy program are required to carry malpractice insurance throughout their time<br />
in the pr<strong>of</strong>essional program.<br />
What are the Limits <strong>of</strong> Coverage?<br />
Limits under the group insurance policy purchased by the <strong>Maryland</strong> State Treasurer for health<br />
occupations students <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> public higher education institutions are $1,000,000.00 per<br />
incident and $3,000,000.00 in the aggregate ($2,000,000.00 per incident and $6,000,000.00 in<br />
the aggregate for sites in Virginia). The pharmacy education program includes all practical<br />
