PHAR 692 - VENOUS THROMBOEMBOLISM (VTE) PHARMACOTHERAPY IN THE ACUTE CARE SETTING<br />

This course will provide in depth coverage <strong>of</strong> current practice, clinical assessment skills and guidelines<br />

pertaining to drug therapy selection, monitoring and dosing <strong>of</strong> anti-thrombosis therapy used to treat<br />

and prevent VTE in hospitalized patients.<br />

PHAR 693 - VENOUS THROMBOEMBOLISM (VTE) PHARMACOTHERAPY IN THE CHRONIC CARE SETTING<br />

This course will provide in depth coverage <strong>of</strong> current practice, clinical assessment skills and guidelines<br />

pertaining to drug therapy selection, monitoring and dosing <strong>of</strong> anti-thrombosis therapy used to treat<br />

and prevent VTE in outpatients.<br />

PHAR 694 - CHANNELOPATHIES: WHEN GOOD CHANNELS GO BAD<br />

This elective module will introduce students to channelopathies, or the pathology <strong>of</strong> ion channels.<br />

Channelopathies are implicated in various disorders that can alter the function <strong>of</strong> skeletal muscle,<br />

neurons and other organ systems in the body including epilepsy, migraines, cystic fibrosis, and<br />

fibromyalgia. These disorders can originate from genetic changes or from changes in gene expression.<br />

Students will learn about the various channelopathies based on the ion channels affected, the<br />

pathological characteristics <strong>of</strong> the disease and pharmacological interventions. Students will also learn<br />

about the development <strong>of</strong> novel techniques in the treatment <strong>of</strong> channelopathies.<br />

PHAR 695 - LEADERSHIP & ADVOCACY IN PHARMACY<br />

This elective course is <strong>of</strong>fered to provide leadership and political advocacy development for pharmacy<br />

students. Students will examine the role <strong>of</strong> pharmacists in political advocacy and community action as<br />

they explore current healthcare issues. Students will have the opportunity to interact with local and<br />

national political leaders.<br />

PHAR 696 - INTER-PROFESSIONAL TEAM INTERACTIONS<br />

This course will be open to pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant and re-habilitation graduate<br />

students. This inter-pr<strong>of</strong>essional course focuses on understanding roles, teamwork and communication<br />

to improve patient outcomes in the health care environment. National standards and initiatives serve as<br />

a major focus for this to the course. Students will work in teams to explore cases with elements common<br />

to all pr<strong>of</strong>essionals such as ethical, behavioral, social and psychological issues and prepare a<br />

collaborative practice project or model.<br />

PHAR 697 - PHARMACEUTICALS AND PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS (PPCP) AS POLLUTANTS<br />

This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the different aspects <strong>of</strong> PPCP pollutants. This includes discussions<br />

on: 1) common examples <strong>of</strong> PPCPs such as chemical substances, i.e. prescription and OTC therapeutic<br />

drugs, veterinary drugs, fragrances and cosmetics, 2) different sources <strong>of</strong> PPCPs such as human activity,<br />

manufacturing, hospitals, illicit drugs, veterinary use and agribusiness, 3) fate <strong>of</strong> PPCPs in the<br />

environment and 4) the strategies that are and can be used to protect the health <strong>of</strong> both the<br />

environment and the public.<br />

PHAR 700 APPE – ADVANCED COMMUNITY PRACTICE<br />

In the Advanced Community Practice required experience, students will effectively participate in the<br />

patient care decision-making process in the community setting. Students will apply knowledge, skills and<br />

abilities developed throughout the curriculum to demonstrate their understanding <strong>of</strong> common disease<br />

states and treatment modalities and to provide patient-centered care and medication management in<br />

the context <strong>of</strong> pharmacy operations.<br />
