VISION STATEMENT SCHOOL OF PHARMACY VISION AND MISSION STATEMENTS The School of Pharmacy is a partner in the community of healthcare educators and practitioners who are patient advocates, dedicated to the delivery of superior care and enhancement of the quality of life for all citizens through the development of highly trained, culturally-competent, articulate, and caring pharmacists. MISSION STATEMENT The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), the State’s Historically Black 1890 Land- Grant Institution emphasizes baccalaureate and graduate programs in the liberal arts, health professions, sciences, and teacher education. The University is committed to meeting the workforce development needs of the Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) Peninsula and the state of Maryland. The School of Pharmacy embraces the mission of the University as it develops a group of faculty and student scholars who are dedicated to impacting the healthcare needs of the people of the Delmarva Peninsula and the nation. The program focuses on a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical, social/administrative and clinical sciences, provision of high-quality patient-centered care and medication therapy management, lifelong learning, and opportunities for multi-cultural development. The faculty, through its teaching, mentoring, and scholarship, will work to maximize student potential and to contribute to the advancement of the profession by preparing generalist pharmacy practitioners, leaders, and scholars. GOALS The Goals of the UMES School of Pharmacy are: 1. To recruit and retain competent faculty who will educationally engage students, serve as ethical, professional, and academic role models, and conduct scholarly activity including publication. 2. To recruit, retain, and educate a diverse group of qualified, motivated, ethical and culturally sensitive students for professional practice and leadership roles in pharmacy. 3. To produce graduates who can communicate effectively with patients, caregivers, and health care professionals. 4. To promote faculty, staff and student involvement in the University, the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions, the community, and professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels. 5. To produce a significant number of graduates who will provide pharmacy services to residents of the Delmarva Peninsula. 6. To produce graduates who are capable of becoming leaders in the clinical and biomedical sciences. 7. To produce graduates who are providers of patient-centered care, innovative services, medication therapy management, and health promotion. 8. To encourage the academic and professional development of secondary and undergraduate students preparing for careers in the health professions and biomedical sciences. Consistent with the mission and goals of the University and the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions, the program will prepare students to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow through exposure to excellent classroom and pharmacy practice experiences. In addition, the program will promote professional and intellectual growth, and a responsibility to humanity. 4
