Students will also complete Experiential Learning Objectives (ELO) while at the site. These opportunities<br />

allow students to observe first-hand the drugs, patients and disease states discussed in class, thus<br />

reinforcing didactic learning experience. Student competencies will progress as the student develops<br />

through the didactic curriculum. Students will be in a community or institutional setting; students who<br />

were in a community setting for PHAR 671 will be placed in an institutional setting for PHAR 672 and<br />

students who were in an institutional setting for PHAR 671 will be placed in an community setting for<br />

PHAR 672.<br />

During the alternating week, students will discuss activities involving the previous week's assignments<br />

which will allow the use <strong>of</strong> small group interactions to strengthen the learning experience.<br />

PHAR 673 - CONCENTRATED IPPE II<br />

When: Between the Fall and Spring terms or the summer between their first and second year.<br />

Number <strong>of</strong> Hours: 80-hour experience (2 credits)<br />

This Concentrated Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (CIPPE) course is designed to help<br />

students make the successful transition from the classroom to the practice environment via practical<br />

application <strong>of</strong> materials learned. The integration <strong>of</strong> classroom knowledge and experiential training<br />

serves as the cornerstone <strong>of</strong> the student’s education, instilling pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism, and ensuring<br />

competency in the provision <strong>of</strong> pharmaceutical care. CIPPE reviews the basic technical and distributive<br />

functions <strong>of</strong> pharmaceutical care in the institutional environment, while providing students the<br />

opportunity to expand their knowledge base, practice their skills, and develop pr<strong>of</strong>essional attitudes in<br />

an actual pharmacy setting.<br />

PHAR 680 - INDEPENDENT STUDIES IN PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH<br />

This elective module will introduce student to methods <strong>of</strong> basic science research in pharmaceutical<br />

sciences through a faculty mentor-directed project. This involves application <strong>of</strong> the scientific process<br />

that includes: (1) formulating the hypothesis, (2) reading <strong>of</strong> scientific literature and evaluation, (3)<br />

experimental design, (4) development <strong>of</strong> technical skills, (5) data acquisition and analysis, (6)<br />

presentation <strong>of</strong> results.<br />

PHAR 681 - DIRECTED STUDIES IN PHARMACY SCIENCES<br />

This course provides an opportunity for qualified pharmacy students to engage in specialized study or<br />

investigative work in pharmaceutical, social/administrative or clinical sciences with specific faculty,<br />

through a faculty mentor-directed project. This project is intended to provide students with a practical<br />

hands-on experience to apply knowledge obtained from the didactic setting. The student(s) and faculty<br />

will develop a detailed study plan with discrete objectives and outcomes Credits: 1-6<br />

PHAR 682 - INTRODUCTORY SPANISH FOR THE PHARMACIST<br />

This course provides the student with the introductory tools to develop sufficient listening and speaking<br />

skills in Spanish for the pharmacy setting to facilitate patient counseling and education in the<br />

appropriate use <strong>of</strong> medications.<br />

PHAR 683 - ADVANCED IMMUNOLOGY<br />

This course will discuss the current progress <strong>of</strong> areas related to immunology including tumor immunity,<br />

virus immunity, or auto-immune diseases. Each year will focus on one <strong>of</strong> these three topics. Contents<br />

include lectures by faculty, seminar by invited speakers, and article presentation by students.<br />

PHAR 684 - ADVANCED TOPICS IN CARDIOVASCULAR PHARMACOTHERAPY<br />

This is an elective course designed to expand on the topics covered during the prerequisite PHAR 612<br />

PTMM: Cardiology module. Students will be exposed to advanced issues involving cardiovascular<br />

therapeutics through a combination <strong>of</strong> online presentations and face-to-face discussions. A systematic<br />

approach to the identification and resolution <strong>of</strong> drug therapy problems will be developed through the<br />
