YOKOI’S LEGENDARY
INSPIRATION
There is a legend in the gaming
world about how the Nintendo
Game and Watch came about.
The legend says that while
traveling on the train from
Kyoto one day, Yokoi noticed a
bored businessman entertaining
himself with the buttons
and lights on his handheld
calculator. This sparked an
idea. Yokoi soon developed
a handheld version of video
game systems. It began with
the Game and Watch in 1980,
which evolved into the Game
Boy in 1989.
allowed players to enjoy killing a
little time without losing track of it
entirely.
At first, the Game and Watch
handheld system was extremely
simple. It had one button for the
clock display, and two buttons
for Game A and Game B. Game
A was easier than Game B. This
quickly evolved into two screens of
equal size, and a more interesting
variety of games and skill levels.
The product caught on quickly,
and Nintendo was ready to expand
again with this new success.
