the people around them while they<br />
play. <strong>The</strong> DS Lite <strong>and</strong> DSi are<br />
rectangular shaped <strong>and</strong> lightweight.<br />
<strong>The</strong>y are also equipped with<br />
microphones <strong>and</strong> touch screens<br />
that allow manipulation of photos.<br />
Both systems are small computers<br />
that are also powerful enough for<br />
fast-action game play. <strong>The</strong> DSi has<br />
a built-in Web browser <strong>and</strong> Wi-Fi<br />
capabilities, so players can join in<br />
play with other gamers at home or<br />
around the world. Or they can surf<br />
the Internet.<br />
A NEW COMPANY PRESIDENT<br />
Yamauchi finally stepped down<br />
as the company’s third president<br />
in 2002. He was replaced by<br />
Satoru Iwata, who had started as<br />
a programmer at the <strong>Nintendo</strong><br />
subsidiary HAL laboratories<br />
(named after the computer “Hal”<br />

RETIREMENT<br />
Now the richest man in Japan,<br />
Hiroshi Yamauchi spends his<br />
days at his home, which is<br />
located near the majestic Buddhist<br />
Shogoin temple. But<br />
even though he is retired, he<br />
still receives messages about<br />
the company <strong>and</strong> has a lot of<br />
influence over the management.<br />
Iwata, the company<br />
president since May of 2002,<br />
says, “He really is amazing. His<br />
instincts are incredibly keen,<br />
<strong>and</strong> he asks these piercing<br />
questions—you think to yourself,<br />
how did he know? I talk<br />
to him every so often on the<br />
phone, <strong>and</strong> it’s like he could<br />
come back tomorrow <strong>and</strong> be<br />
the president without any<br />
trouble, he’s that sharp.” 1<br />
