the people around them while they
play. The DS Lite and DSi are
rectangular shaped and lightweight.
They are also equipped with
microphones and touch screens
that allow manipulation of photos.
Both systems are small computers
that are also powerful enough for
fast-action game play. The DSi has
a built-in Web browser and Wi-Fi
capabilities, so players can join in
play with other gamers at home or
around the world. Or they can surf
the Internet.
A NEW COMPANY PRESIDENT
Yamauchi finally stepped down
as the company’s third president
in 2002. He was replaced by
Satoru Iwata, who had started as
a programmer at the Nintendo
subsidiary HAL laboratories
(named after the computer “Hal”

RETIREMENT
Now the richest man in Japan,
Hiroshi Yamauchi spends his
days at his home, which is
located near the majestic Buddhist
Shogoin temple. But
even though he is retired, he
still receives messages about
the company and has a lot of
influence over the management.
Iwata, the company
president since May of 2002,
says, “He really is amazing. His
instincts are incredibly keen,
and he asks these piercing
questions—you think to yourself,
how did he know? I talk
to him every so often on the
phone, and it’s like he could
come back tomorrow and be
the president without any
trouble, he’s that sharp.” 1
