concept: interchangeable game<br />

cartridges, yet small enough to hold<br />

in your h<strong>and</strong>s. Similar to the NES,<br />

Game Boy hardware would set up<br />

a huge market for interchangeable<br />

game software. It also had a long<br />

battery life. Kids loved the Game<br />

Boy, but it was also popular among<br />

adults. Two hundred thous<strong>and</strong> were<br />

sold in Japan in two weeks, <strong>and</strong><br />

40,000 were sold the first day they<br />

were launched in the United States.<br />

Meanwhile, the famed<br />

<strong>Nintendo</strong> Research <strong>and</strong><br />

Development Team 4 headed by<br />

Miyamoto was “retired” in 1989.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Entertainment Analysis <strong>and</strong><br />

Development (EAD) division took<br />

<strong>its</strong> place <strong>and</strong> became the largest<br />

WARIO<br />

Developers at <strong>Nintendo</strong><br />

decided that Mario should<br />

have another antagonist<br />

besides Bowser <strong>and</strong> Donkey<br />

Kong, so they invented Wario.<br />

He first appeared in the 1992<br />

Game Boy game, Super Mario<br />

L<strong>and</strong>. He had an exaggerated<br />

resemblance to Mario. <strong>The</strong><br />

name Wario is derived from<br />

Mario, <strong>and</strong> also from the Japanese<br />

adjective warui, which<br />

means “bad,” suggesting that<br />

he is a bad version of Mario.<br />
