INSPIRATION FOR WII FIT
Miyamoto and his team were in charge
of creating the software for the Wii. The team
first created two packs of games for the new
console. They created the “Party Pack” for the
whole family and the “Sports Pack,” which
had games based on sports. These became
Wii Play and Wii Sports respectively.
Around this time, Miyamoto had just
turned 40 years old, and he decided to work
out to lose some weight. He noticed that
swimming made the weight come off naturally,
and he enjoyed getting in shape. He
knew that people wanted to have fun while
losing weight. Through this process, he
decided to create the Wii “Health Pack,” which
became Wii Fit. By late December of 2008, the
company had sold 14 million Wii Fit games
around the world.
Nintendo has
sold more than 70
million Wii’s since its
launch. Around half
of those were sold
in the United States
alone. This is striking
when compared to
Sony’s PlayStation 3
(PS3) and Microsoft’s
Xbox 360, each
having sold around
40 million systems as
of 2010. Nintendo
clearly dominates the
market not only in the
