DONKEY KONG ARRIVES
NAMING THE GAME
Since he had based the story
loosely on King Kong, Miyamoto
wanted to include the name Kong
right from the start. Everyone
would associate the name with
a gorilla. His gorilla also had a
severe stubborn streak and was a
bit goofy, so, after some discussion,
he and the designers added donkey
to the name. Don-key in Japanese
means silly, goofy, or even stupid.
The plumber would be named
Jumpman. At last, Miyamoto
was ready to send out the game
to replace Radarscope. Donkey
Kong was on its way to NOA’s new
headquarters in Seattle.
TOP SELLERS
Donkey Kong’s original success
was continued by Nintendo’s
Super Mario Brothers video
game, which came out in
1985. This was the bestselling
game of all time for
many years, with more than
40 million copies sold. But as
of 2010, it had been bumped
down to second place. Which
game was in first place? Wii
Sports, with more than 41 million
games sold.
