Paraleptolepis kikuchii sp. nov.<br />

Diagnosis. It differs from other species of the genus <strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g the comb<strong>in</strong>ation of<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g characters. The body depth is conta<strong>in</strong>ed 3.2 to 3.7 times <strong>in</strong> the standard<br />

length. The head length is conta<strong>in</strong>ed 3.5 to 4.3 times <strong>in</strong> the standard length. The<br />

first dorsal f<strong>in</strong> pterygiophore is <strong>in</strong>serted between the neural sp<strong>in</strong>es of the first and<br />

second caudal vertebrae or above the neural sp<strong>in</strong>e of the first caudal vertebra. The<br />

pelvic f<strong>in</strong> is short and does not reach the pelvic <strong>in</strong>sertion. The anterior three anal<br />

pterygiophores are <strong>in</strong>serted between the haemal sp<strong>in</strong>es of the first and the second<br />

caudal vertebrae. The number of vertebrae is 40 to 42, with 19 to 20 caudal<br />

vertebrae. The number of ribs is 18 to 20.<br />

Holotype. KMNH VP 100,222, an almost complete specimen, with its right side<br />

exposed. The standard length is 55.5 mm.<br />

Paratypes. KMNH VP 100,223, an almost complete specimen with its left side<br />

exposed, but parts of dorsal and anal f<strong>in</strong>s are miss<strong>in</strong>g. The standard length is 48.4<br />

mm. KMNH VP 100,224, an almost complete specimen with its left side exposed,<br />

but the head region is miss<strong>in</strong>g. The length between the pelvic <strong>in</strong>sertion and the end<br />

of the hypural is 36.8 mm. KMNH VP 100,225, an almost complete specimen with
