First time gown sewers should consider making a toile of the garment before tackling the real thing. Toile, the dressmaker’s term for a trial garment in cheaper fabrics, can be made in different weights of calico. With this you can pre-empt any problems and gauge the drape and so forth of the gown. Silk dupion, as pictured here, lends itself perfectly to voluminous gowns or dressy garments that require structure. It’s great for strapless and corsetry-based pieces and can also be used for accessories such as clutch purses and headpieces. Beginner sewers should ensure they maintain substantial seam allowances to cope with any fraying. Made in Japan, Spotlight’s delustered satin is high quality, with a gorgeous heaviness that sculpts beautifully and holds its shape. It has a reputation as being highly flattering. Referred to in the fashion world as peau de soie (skin of silk), delustered satin has a lovely lustre but is less shiny than other satins, producing tasteful, elegant results. Romance lace is soft lightweight lace with the characteristics of traditional French corded lace. It’s great for overlaying and for select placement and, of course, can be beaded. Both are perfect for bridal garments. Remember to use good sharp scissors and a new universal sharp needle for sewing on the machine.
