Barbara takes her sewing
skills to the slums of Kenya
Spotlight is privileged to have,
amongst its store teams, many
talented and creative individuals but
it is their generosity of spirit and
kindness that is often most striking.
These same qualities are also
reflected in Spotlight’s customers.
Barbara Travis from Spotlight
Cockburn, in Western Australia, is a
stellar example of this spirit. She is
one of those incredible individuals
willing to share their time and talents
with some of the poorest people in
the world. We salute her!
Barbara responded to an
advertisement about volunteering
in the region; the slums continue to
swell.
Another WA woman, Susan
Saleeba, founded the Centre with
the aim of providing education to
the destitute. The philosophy: assist
those who, through lack of education,
have no voice, no food and no selfrespect.
Supporters of the project are
encouraged to visit Kenya and provide
hands on support.
Barbara’s role while in Kenya was
to help the sewing teacher and she
arrived armed with bags of tailor’s
chalk, pins, needles, thread and
scissors supplied by her Spotlight
store. Aware that Nakuru is often
referred to as “the dust bowl of
