Before
Materials
Canvas fabric – navy, lime & printed
Navy piping
Elastic
Calico to create toile (optional)
Tape measure
Scissors
Sewing machine with zipper foot
Paper & pencil
Step 1 Create a pattern using
pencil and paper to make a slip
cover for the item, in this case a foot
stool. If desired, cut out the pattern
in calico and sew it together to check
that the pattern fits properly. When
the pattern is correct, cut out fabric
pieces.
Step 2 To attach piping, place
piping on right side of canvas for the
top of the stool aligning raw edges of
piping fabric and canvas so the cord
is facing inward. Pin in place and
using the zipper foot on the sewing
machine, stitch close to the cord.
Stitch the side piece to the top, right
sides together, using the zipper foot
and again stitching close to the cord.
Step 3 Cut a piece of fabric the
same length as the side piece and
approximately 10cm wide, finish
each end with a folded and straight
stitched edge then fold and press
in half lengthways. Match the raw
edges with the side piece then
stitch in place to create a casing for
elastic. Place the slip cover onto the
stool then thread the elastic through
the casing and stitch or tie ends
together. •
Note: Creating a slip cover rather
than reupholstering makes for easy
removal for cleaning or updating for
a new look.
