EVERYONE’S
BAKING ...
CAKE POPS!
Once upon a time all anyone
could talk about was cupcakes
when it came to tasty, trendy
baked goods. Now cake pops
are on the rise, tiny globes of
deliciousness that just beg to
be decorated. The UK’s Carolyn
White, owner of a company
called Cakes 4 Fun, has a new
book out - Bake me I’m yours ...
Cake Pops - so we’ve asked her
to explain just what all the fuss
is about.
GCQ: When did cake pops first
start appearing in the UK and how
popular are they?
Carolyn: Cake pops started to
appear in 2008. Early 2010 is
when we started to design our
cake pops. They are two of my
biggest passions combinedchocolate
and cake! We started
running classes with pigs and
reindeers (making them, not
teaching them). The success
of these led to our book. Cake
pops are very popular in the
UK- everyone is still looking
for something to take over the
success of the hugely popular
cupcake.
GCQ: Can you explain what they
actually are?
Carolyn: Gorgeous cake, delicious
butter cream and decadent
ganache all enrobed in Belgian
chocolate.
GCQ: Who is your book aimed
at - beginner cooks or the more
experienced?
Carolyn: Complete beginners
through to those who have
dabbled in cake pops who are
looking for more inspiration.
GCQ: Who likes cake pops more -
adults or children?
Carolyn: Anyone aged from three
to one hundred.
GCQ: If you had to choose your
last meal, what cake would be
served?
Carolyn: Something with
chocolate orange ganache; our
‘death by chocolate’ sponge
covered in it! And I’d choose
carrot cake with lemon cream
cheese frosting - as a second
choice.
GCQ: While we have you we
just have to ask about weddings
... what’s the most unusual or
difficult cake your company has
been asked to produce for a
wedding?
Carolyn: We did a ‘knights and
ladies’ cake - a castle with a lady
wearing a very tight corset top
and her knight in shining armour.
A Fiat car with people in it is
another memorable one but there
