5mm space Template for cover make it • Inside front cover spine Inside back cover 5 Step 1 Cut papers – decorative and copy, to measure 14.5cm x 28cm then fold in half to form the pages of the book. Fold vellum sheets in half for pages. Each signature contains 1 decorative paper, 2 vellum sheets, 2 copy pages, a decorated envelope pocket and an embossed card. Step 2 Fold the flap of an envelope over twice then secure in place with some zigzag stitches or double-sided tape. Cut a strip of decorative paper 4cm x the width of the paper then fold in half and nest the envelope inside the fold attaching at the back with stitching or tape. Attach a silver fancy to the strip in the centre with stitching or tape. Create three signatures by nesting folded papers and envelope pocket inside an embossed card. Step 3 Create a template for stitching the signatures by using a scrap of card, trim the scrap to 14.5cm x 10cm then fold in half lengthways. Measure 2cm from the top edge and mark the spot, then measure 2cm from the bottom edge and mark. Divide the space between the marks into four and mark. Measure 1cm on both sides of the centre then recreate the marks. Use a hole punch to punch out the holes on the template. Step 4 Cut a piece of the decorative wedded paper 15cm x 15cm then fold in half. Place the folded template in the fold of the decorative paper and mark all the stitching holes then punch out. Place the template in the centre fold of the signatures and punch out the centre line of holes only in each signature. Stitch the signatures to the decorative paper using the topstitch thread beginning in the bottom hole then stitch in and out of the holes in order until the stitching ends back at the beginning then tie off the threads. Step 5 Create the cover. Cut two pieces of book board to measure 15.5cm x 15.5cm and one piece to measure 15.5cm x 2.5cm. Cover the outside of the two larger pieces with the decorative paper using the PVA glue. Cut a 12cm x 20cm piece of decorative paper from a different patterned sheet, cover the wrong side of the paper with PVA glue then quickly lay the cover pieces on top of the glue with the spine piece in the centre aligning the covers on each side of the spine leaving a 5mm space (see diagram). Fold the excess paper top and bottom over to the inside of the cover and smooth down. Thread a buckle onto the silver ribbon then attach to the cover to hide the edge of the spine paper using double-sided tape, this is a good way to hide the edge if it is crooked. Step 6 Glue the decorative paper holding the signatures to the spine, centering the signatures and overlapping the front and back covers. Cut two pieces of paper 15cm x 15cm then glue in place on the inside of the covers hiding the ribbon ends and the paper holding the signatures. Decorate the cover with the sparkles alphabet and decorate the pages with tabs from the die cuts and paper lace. • Note: Create more signatures or add more pages to suit your requirements.
