Darning/free-motion foot for machine
Iron
Quilters safety pins
Step 1 Cut a piece of the neutral
batik fabric 35cm x 55cm. Cut a piece
of both quilters muslin and pellon
slightly larger (approx 45cm x 65cm)
than the batik then fuse the pellon to
the muslin. With pellon right side up,
centre the batik on top right side up.
Use safety pins to secure the layers
together.
Step 2 Thread machine with
neutral thread, attach darning foot and
drop the feed dogs then set machine
to straight stitch. Begin stitching
in the centre of the piece and work
towards the outer edges in circles
approximately the size of a five cent
piece. Continue stitching until the
entire piece is quilted.
Step 3 Cut a piece of autumn
tone batik 80cm x 50cm. Cut a piece
of both quilters muslin and pellon
slightly larger (approx 90cm x 60cm)
than the batik then fuse the pellon to
the muslin. With pellon right side up,
centre the batik on top right side up.
Use safety pins to secure the layers
together.
Step 4 Thread the machine with
the variegated sulky thread. Raise the
feed dogs and replace the darning foot
with the regular sewing foot. Begin
straight stitching lines across the
fabric at varying widths until the entire
piece is quilted. Add some diagonal
lines of stitching if desired.
Step 5 Cut the neutral piece
(top section) into two pieces each
measuring 16.5cm x 48cm. Cut the
autumn tone piece (bottom section)
into two pieces each measuring
35.5cm x 48cm. Place each top and
bottom section together, right sides
facing, pin and stitch together using
1cm seam allowance. Press seams
open. With right sides facing and
matching seams at side, pin then sew
bag pieces together along sides and
across the bottom.
To create the base, flatten out the
bottom and match the side seam to
the seam at the bottom of the bag.
Pin together and mark 5.5cm down
from the point and rule across to form
a triangle to create an 11cm base
for bag. Stitch across end then add a
second row of stitching 5mm from the
first. Trim seam to 1.5cm, cutting off
the point. Repeat for the other end of
the base. Turn right side out and press.
Fold top edge over 4cm, press and pin
in place.
Step 6 For the handles cut two
10cm x 80cm strips and two 4cm x
80cm pieces of pellon. Fuse pellon to
the centre of wrong side of the fabric.
Fold one long edge of fabric over the
pellon, press other long edge 1cm to
the wrong side then fold over pellon.
Stitch down the centre of the handle
to secure then add one more row of
stitching on each side approximately
5mm from edges. Fold each end of
handles over 2cm to the back and
press. Stitch handles to front and back
of the bag 10cm in from side seams
aligning bottom of the handles with
bottom of the top section of the bag.
Step 7 To create lining for bag cut
two 48cm x 52cm pieces from the
neutral batik. Stitch side seams and
bottom seam then create the base
same as for the bag but do not turn
right side out. Fold top edge over 4cm
to wrong side and press. Insert lining
into bag matching side seams, pin
and stitch lining to bag around the top
edge. •
Note: Quilt the fabrics as much or as
little as desired.
What is Batik?
Batik is the process of dyeing
fabric that has patterns drawn on
it with wax. The wax resists the
dye, creating beautiful organiclooking
finishes. It orginates from
Indonesia and examples of the
technique can be found everywhere
from Asia to Egypt and Nigeria.
