SEW STORY
Spotlight’s autumn winter fabric collections represent
the hottest fashion trends, translated into weights and
colours chosen specifically for Australasian climates.
New fabrics at Spotlight this
season reflect the more moderate
climate we generally experience
here as opposed to our European and
North American fashion loving friends.
As Tim Hanrahan, business manager
in Spotlight’s Sew department
explains, the season in our region
can be quite short but we still want
to take part in international fashion
trends. To this end lightweight and
trans-seasonal fabrics have been
sourced that suit current fashion
looks.
Starlet, Pop Colour, Femme Fatale,
The Hunter, The Free Spirit and
Film Noir are the six fun collection
names that have been designed for
Spotlight’s autumn winter fashion
fabric collections.
Starlet takes sewers into the
‘Mad Men’ era of the 1960s with looks
like the classic Chanel boucle tweed
knit jacket, lots of matching garments
– skirts and jackets – in lovely peach
and pinks. The fabrics in this collection
are very textured and suits of colour
can be worn in similar tones but in
different textures. As Tim explains,
these fabrics will be introduced slowly
through autumn and winter and will
remain a great choice for garments
leading into summer.
Pop Colour describes a group
of colours and designs reminiscent
of Warhol’s pop art days and the
fabric designs of the ‘Mod’ era. On
the floor at your local Spotlight store
you’ll find loads of polyester sheers,
plenty of clear colours and great
geometric patterns. These designs
suit homewares as much as garments
so consider using ‘pops’ of colour
throughout the house.
Femme Fatale is part of a general
return to grown-up, sophisticated
and glamorous forms. Rich jewel-like
colours such as gold and purple are
presented in equally lustrous fabrics
– velvet and textured pile in particular.
Look at these fabrics for scarfs,
cushions and bedspreads as well as
complete garments. Tone down bright
colours with attractive astrakhan
collars or wide waist-cinching belts.
The Hunter is another true
winter collection that brings to mind
images of wild green woods, bracing
country walks and views through rain
spattered windows. “This is a less
serious version of the equestrian or
hunting lodge looks we have seen
previously,” says Tim. “There are lots
of tonal classics here, tonal layering
and an underlying free spirit.” Tweeds,
herringbone, pinstripes, brushed felts
and melton wool (95 per cent wool,
five per cent nylon) can all be found
in this collection. These are great for
making jackets and heavy looking,
light weight coats. And they’re much
easier to sew than some of the satins
and chiffons that have been popular in
previous seasons. “These will be great
for homewares too,” says Tim.
Also in The Hunter area you will find
trims – faux snakeskin for example –
as well as iron on motifs (black and
gold tattoo designs), real brocade and
jacquards and a lot of faux fur. Much
of the fur is now in pre-cut formats so
you can buy as much or as little as you
like (perfect for adding to collars and
cuffs etcetera).
The Free Spirit is a look tailormade
for the creative rebels out there.
Decorative patterns, hand crafted
elements, raw finishes and tribal
influences define this collection. Ikat
and chunky yarn dyed patterns fall
within this collection as do natural
fibres including linen. The colour
pool includes green, blue, ochre, tan,
orange and gorgeous fuchsia.”
