CAROL DWECK: FIXED MINDSET
VS. GROWTH MINDSET
Fixed Mindset
o Child assumes that you
either have talent or
you do not (e.g., “I am
smart.” or “I am not
creative.”).
o Problem: Every failure
becomes evidence that
child is “stupid” and
that nothing can be
done to change that
sentiment.
Growth Mindset
o Child assumes that
intelligence, talent, etc.
is not an either/or
situation.
o These characteristics
are built by hard work
LINK BETWEEN “FIXED MINDSET” AND
ANXIETY & OCD:
ATTRIBUTION THEORY
An attribution is the explanation we give
ourselves for why something happened.
Our attributions shape our beliefs and our
behaviors.
Thus, if we change a patient’s attribution, we
can change his or her belief set and
behaviors.
