1a. Behavior Therapy!
• Exposure to situations that bring on obsessions
(e.g., handling “dirty” things) can help reduce
anxiety, obsessions, and compulsions by itself.!
• Ritual (or response) prevention (e.g., not washing
or not avoiding “dirty” things) can help reduce
anxiety, obsessions, and compulsions by itself.!
• Exposure and ritual prevention (ERP), almost
always used together, are the most effective
treatment for both obsessions and compulsions.!
Key Elements of Successful $
Behavior Therapy!
• Have the right attitude!
• Target the right thought (don’t shower
quicker)!
• Start in an area where progress will bring relief,
a payoff, or improvement in quality of life (to
self or significant other)!
• Start easy, then go for harder (don’t start half
way up the ladder)!
• Keep up motivation!
Three Steps for Handling$
Obsessive Thoughts!
1. Is it OCD!
2. Like phantom limb pain, it feels tota'y real;
but it’s bogus, and you don’t have to act on it.!
3. “You may be right,” “Oh well, so what” “I’m
willing to take that risk.”!
Finding a Good Therapist!
(from AustinOCD.com)!
1. Get some names#
Insurance company lists of providers, IOCDF,
local support groups, ABCT, ADAA, state &
local professional groups (e.g., psychologists,
psychiatrists), university training clinics, etc.!
2. Check them out#
Ask about “experience,” type of approach
(CBT, BT, CT), “I’ve heard of, um, exposure
and, um . . . something about prevention . . . ”!
