with regurgitation and weight loss. Barium swallow shows a dilated taper<strong>in</strong>g<br />

oesophagus.<br />

2 A 65-year-old smoker presents with a history of severe oesophagitis and<br />

gradually worsen<strong>in</strong>g dysphagia.<br />

3 A 28-year-old woman presents with a feel<strong>in</strong>g of a lump <strong>in</strong> her throat that<br />

causes some discomfort on swallow<strong>in</strong>g. Exam<strong>in</strong>ation and imag<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />

pharynx and oesophagus reveal no abnormality.<br />

4 A 40-year-old man compla<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>in</strong>termittent dysphagia associated with chest<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>. Barium swallow reveals a corkscrew oesophagus.<br />

5 A 55-year-old man presents cough<strong>in</strong>g when he tries to swallow. On exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

he has a flaccid fasciculat<strong>in</strong>g tongue.<br />
