Respiratory medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of respiratory exam<strong>in</strong>ation are common <strong>in</strong> extended match<strong>in</strong>g questions<br />

(<strong>EMQs</strong>) and can be confus<strong>in</strong>g. Box 1 summarizes some f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs that are highly<br />

suggestive of particular diagnoses that are likely to be found <strong>in</strong> the options.<br />

Pulmonary fibrosis<br />

Upper airway obstruction, e.g. foreign body, croup<br />

Be aware that clubb<strong>in</strong>g can be associated with several respiratory conditions and<br />

this non-specific sign may be mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>EMQs</strong> (Box 2).<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g aware of dist<strong>in</strong>ctive chest radiograph changes is very useful when tackl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>EMQs</strong>. Box 3 summarizes some pathologies that should spr<strong>in</strong>g to m<strong>in</strong>d when you<br />

see particular phrases <strong>in</strong> <strong>EMQs</strong>.
