B–13. Geographic terms<br />

a. Abbreviate United States when preceding Government or the name of a Government organization, except in<br />

formal writing. Spell out United States when it is used as a noun or when it is used as an adjective in association with<br />

names of other countries. When abbreviations are used in correspondence within DOD or to other Government<br />

agencies, periods after U.S. may be omitted.<br />
