Introduction<br />

<strong>Africa</strong>’s f<strong>in</strong>ancial systems face challenges across many dimensions,<br />

as discussed <strong>in</strong> the report F<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Africa</strong>: Through the Crisis and Beyond. 1<br />

The analysis <strong>in</strong> that report was based partly on several detailed background<br />

papers that are <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this volume. The next six chapters are<br />

written by experts <strong>in</strong> their respective areas and provide an <strong>in</strong>-depth<br />

analysis of these challenges and present possible solutions. In this <strong>in</strong>troduction,<br />

we provide an overview of the different chapters and how they<br />

are related to each other and the ma<strong>in</strong> volume.<br />

Part I: Expand<strong>in</strong>g Access<br />

The three chapters <strong>in</strong> part I focus on key challenges concerned with<br />

access to f<strong>in</strong>ancial services, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ancial and operational deficiencies<br />

<strong>in</strong> the microf<strong>in</strong>ance market, reap<strong>in</strong>g the benefits from the technological<br />

revolution of retail bank<strong>in</strong>g, and deepen<strong>in</strong>g and broaden<strong>in</strong>g agricultural<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ance across <strong>Africa</strong>. The three chapters thus each cover different aspects<br />

with a different focus, rang<strong>in</strong>g from an <strong>in</strong>stitutional approach to a focus<br />

on <strong>in</strong>novation as a driver of f<strong>in</strong>ancial broaden<strong>in</strong>g to an important element<br />

of f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>frastructure to a specific sector.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Africa</strong> advocates a broader approach to f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>clusion,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g look<strong>in</strong>g at a broad set of <strong>in</strong>stitutions to deliver f<strong>in</strong>ancial services<br />
