The selection was made by nearly 50 children’s librarians from Estonian county
and city central libraries. The vote was based on a list of the best Estonian
picture books that met the project criteria, put together by the Estonian
Children’s Literature Centre. The final list was composed at the Centre,
on the basis of the voting results submitted by the libraries. The list
includes both all-time most-popular Estonian picture books (the ‘classics’)
and contemporary works with timeless content.
Rongisõit [A Train Ride]
Tammerraamat, 2013 (1st edition 1957) • ISBN 9789949482825
A Train Ride is a brisk rhyming story about a trip
that ends in disaster. Kittens, puppies, piglets,
billy-goats and other familiar animals are riding
on a train conducted by a duck – some are
headed to pastures, some to berry fields, and
others just to visit friends. The monotonous
clickety-clack of the train wheels lulls the duck to
sleep. The train veers into the ditch with a bang,
the passengers are tossed head-over-heels out of
the train cars, and the trip is interrupted for this
time around.
Hoogne värsslugu õnnetusega lõppenud rongireisist.
Kiisud, kutsud, notsud, sikud jt koduloomad
sõidavad piilupardi juhitud rongis kes karjamaale,
kes marjamaale, kes lihtsalt sõbrale külla. Rataste
ühetooniline hääl uinutab piilupardi magama. Rong
sõidab pauguga kraavi, reisijad pudenevad pead-jalad
läbisegi vagunitest välja ja reis jääb sedakorda pooleli.
Sipsik [Raggie]
Tammerraamat, 2014 (1st edition 1962) • ISBN 9789949449477
Six-year-old Mart makes a rag doll as a birthday
present for his younger sister Anu. The doll comes
to life and becomes the little girl’s best friend and
playmate. Together, they feed the birds, gather
mushrooms and go to the seaside. Raggie fights
wasps, becomes a television show-host and goes
to the moon in a rocket made out of a shoe box.
Kuueaastane Mart meisterdab sünnipäevaks oma
nooremale õele Anule kaltsunuku. Nukk ärkab ellu ja
temast saab väikesele tüdrukule südamesõber ja parim
mängukaaslane. Koos söödetakse tihaseid, käiakse
seenemetsas ja mere ääres. Sipsik võitleb herilastega,
esineb televiisoris ja käib kingakarbist meisterdatud
raketiga Kuu peal.
