A wordless picture book that crosses over the
age range, the story is told through the pictures.
Life along the Italian river Po is described in four
episodes, one for each season of the year: the
tragedy of the flood during autumn; in winter
time the night birth of a calf in a warm stable;
in springtime the village celebration for the
rebirth of nature, and the magic beginning of a
love story; and finally, in summer, the escape of
a tiger from a circus and its unbelievable meeting
with a painter, in a sort of magic moment out
of time. Through the use of pictures the book
allows everyone to discover their own words and
emotions, celebrating with poetry the flowing
of the Po river and recalling the cycle of nature
and rural life, in its alternating of night and
day, of death and life. The choice of this book
by Italian librarians, confirms the recognition
of the great artistic maturity of the author and
the acceptance of universal works without any
language or age limits as magnificent examples
for an ideal borderless museum of picture books.
Un silent book e un cross-over: un libro fatto
esclusivamente di immagini per raccontare una
storia senza età. In quattro episodi, uno per ogni
stagione dell’anno, la vita lungo il Po: la tragedia
dell’alluvione in autunno, la nascita notturna di un
vitello in inverno nel calore di una stalla che brilla di
luce propria nel paesaggio bianco di neve; una festa
di paese in primavera, che celebra il rinascere della
natura e l’inizio di una storia d’amore; infine, in estate,
la fuga di una tigre dal tendone di un circo e il suo
incredibile incontro sospeso nel tempo con un pittore.
Attraverso le immagini il libro permette a ciascuno
di trovare le proprie parole e immergersi nelle proprie
emozioni, evocando con poesia lo scorrere del fiume
Po e nello stesso tempo celebrando il tempo circolare
della natura e della vita rurale, nel suo susseguirsi di
notte e giorno, morte e vita. La scelta di questo libro,
oltre a confermare e riconoscere la grande maturità
artistica dell’autore, sembra anche sottolineare una
tendenza nelle preferenze dei bibliotecari italiani, che
rifuggono le gabbie delle fasce d’età e non trascurano
opere “universali”, quelle senza limiti linguistici e di
età, proposte magnifiche per un ideale museo senza
frontiere dei picture books.

A child tells about his faraway father, a pirate,
who comes back home only once a year, in
summer, bringing with him the sea water smell.
The text gives voice to the child, and the pictures
re-create the sunny images taking shape in
his mind as his father talks, telling him about
hidden treasure maps, the faces of the other
pirates who are his companions, the black flag
waving on the ship... all this until the sad, grey
day when the child and his mother have to travel
to another country to his father who is hurt and
hospitalised. The child finds out that his father
has been in an accident but it didn’t happen to
him boarding an enemy ship but just working in
a mine. The child finds the reality hard to accept,
after the fascinating and loving tales that his
father has told him in the past and must now find
a way to overcome his disappointement. This is
a book that captures the emotions and touches
the heart. It opens a page of Italian history with
sensitivity and poetry, and makes it possible for
us to feel closer to other contemporary tragedies,
to other faraway fathers and their sons.
Un bambino racconta del padre lontano, che torna
a casa solo una volta l’anno, d’estate, profumato di
mare perché è un pirata... Mentre il testo dà voce al
bambino, le illustrazioni ricostruiscono le immagini
solari che gli si formano nella mente ai racconti
del padre: le mappe del tesoro nascosto, i visi degli
altri pirati, la bandiera che sventola sulla nave, fino
al triste e grigio giorno in cui parte con sua madre
e raggiunge il padre ferito e ricoverato in ospedale.
Un incidente è accaduto, non durante un arrembaggio
ma mentre lavorava. E la realtà allora si fa strada,
amara e difficile, dopo le affascinanti e amorevoli
bugie. Il bambino deve fare ora i conti con la delusione
ma anche con la capacità di comprendere il significato
di “speranza”, che può prendere la forma di in una
bandiera pirata issata in un luogo inatteso. Un libro
che cattura, conquista e commuove, che sa aprire
con delicatezza e poesia una pagina tragica della
storia italiana, assumendosi con fantasia la funzione
di memoria nazionale, e che può avvicinarci ad altre
tragedie attuali, ad altri padri e figli tra loro lontani.
