of the moving car or ears, and said space or passage-way shall always<br />

be kept free from obstructions.<br />

Rule 48. No miner or laborer shall run ears out of any breast or<br />

chamber or on any gravity road unless he is a suitable person, employed<br />

by the mine foreman for that particular work; and no person<br />

shall be employed by any mine foreman to perform such work,<br />

under the age of sixteen (10) years.<br />

Rule 49. Safety holes shall be made at the bottom of all slopes<br />

and planes and be kept free from obstruction to enable the footman<br />

to escape readily in case of danger.<br />

Rule 50. Safety blocks or some other device for the purpose of<br />

preventing cars from falling into a shaft or running away on a slope<br />

or plane, shall be placed at or near the head of every shaft, slope or<br />

plane, and said safety blocks or other device must be maintained in<br />

good working order.<br />

Rule 51. No person shall travel on any gravity train while cars<br />

are being hoisted or lowered thereon. Whenever ten (10) persons arrive<br />

at the bottom or top of any plane on which it is necessary for<br />

men to travel, traffic thereon shall be suspended for a period of time<br />

long enough to permit them to reach the top or bottom of said plane.<br />

Rule 52. No mine cars shall be used in any mine unless the<br />

bumpers are of sufficient length and width to keep the bodies of said<br />

cars separated by not less than twelve (12) inches when the cars<br />

stand on a straight level road and the bumpers touch each other.<br />

Rule 53. It shall be the duly of the owner, operator or superintendent<br />

of any or all coal breakers, to have them properly heated in<br />

order to prevent injury to the health of persons employed therein.<br />

Rule 54. For the purpose of making known the rules and the provisions<br />

of this act to all<br />

persons employed in or about such mine or<br />

colliery to which this act applies, an abstract of the act and rules<br />

shall be posted up in legible characters in some conspicuous place<br />

or places at or near the mine or colliery, where they may be conveniently<br />

read by the persons employed, and so often as the same becomes<br />

obliterated or destroyed the owner, operator or superintendent<br />

shall cause them to be renewed with all reasonable dispatch. Any<br />

person who pulls down, injures or defaces such abstract of the act or<br />

rules when posted up in pursuance to<br />

the provisions of this act, shall<br />

be guilty of an offense againsl this act.<br />

Rule 55. No person or persons working in any coal mine or colliery<br />

shall cut any props or timbers while the same are in position to<br />

support the roof or sides. When it becomes necessary to remove<br />

any of the said props or timbers for the purpose of mining coal that<br />

may be supported by the same, to dislodge any of the said props or<br />

timbers, it must be done by blasting.<br />

Rule 56. It shall not be lawful for any mine foreman or superintendent<br />

of any mine or colliery to employ any person who is not com-
