Duties of Engineer.<br />

Rule 20. It shall be the duty of the engineer to keep a careful<br />

watch over his engine and all machinery under his charge and see<br />

that the boilers are properly supplied with water, cleaned and inspected<br />

at proper intervals, and that the steam pressure does not exceed<br />

at any time the limit allowed by the superintendent.<br />

Rule 21. He shall make himself acquainted with the signal codes<br />

provided for in this act.<br />

Rule 22. He shall not allow any unauthorized person to enter the<br />

engine house, neither shall he allow any person to handle or run the<br />

engine, without the permission of the superintendent.<br />

Rule 2o. When workmen are being raised or lowered he shall take<br />

special precautions to keep the engine well under control.<br />

Rule 24. The locomotive engineer must keep a sharp lookout<br />

ahead of his engine and sound the whistle or alarm bell frequently<br />

when coming near the partings or landings; he must not exceed the<br />

speed allowed by the mine foreman or superintendent. He must<br />

not allow any person except his attendants, to ride on the engine or<br />

on the full<br />

Duties of Firemen.<br />

Every fireman and other person in charge of a boiler or<br />

boilers for the generation of steam shall keep a careful watch of the<br />

same; he shall see that the steam pressure does not at any time exceed<br />

the limit allowed by the superintendent; he shall frequently try<br />

the safety-valve and shall not increase the weight on the same; he<br />

shall maintain a proper depth of water in each boiler, and if anything<br />

should happen to prevent this, he shall report the same without<br />

delay to<br />

the superintendent, or other person designated by the<br />

superintendent, and take such other action as may, under the particular<br />

circumstances, be necessary for the protection of life and the<br />

preservation of property.<br />

Rule 26.<br />

Duties of Fan Engineer.<br />

The engineer in charge .of any ventilating fan must keep<br />

it running at such speed as the mine foreman directs in writing. In<br />

case of accident to the boiler or fan machinery, not requiring the immediate<br />

withdrawal of the men from the mine by reason of serious<br />

interruption of the ventilation, lie shall invariably notify the mine<br />

foreman. If ordinary repairs of the fan or machinery becomes necessary,<br />

he must give timely notice to the mine foreman and await his<br />

instructions before stopping it. Tie shall also examine at the<br />

beginning of each shift all (lie fan bearings, slays and other parts,<br />

and see that they are kept in proper working order. Should it become<br />

impossible to run the fan or necessary to stop it to prevea'<br />
