Grhem Mine— Ventilation is in very good condition, a new shaft<br />

having been sunk and furnace built during the year. Mine was well<br />

drained.<br />

Standard Nos. 1 and<br />

2.- The former has fair drainage and ventilation,<br />

the latter has eight men employed and does not conic under the<br />

inspection law.<br />

Orient No. 1 Mine.—The ventilation and drainage were in fair condition,<br />

a new furnace shaft<br />

having been put down during the year.<br />

Orient Xo. 2 Mine.— Is a new operation on B Seam of coal with<br />

compressed air mining machines and mule haulage. The ventilation<br />

and man wav are not yet completed, but the air was fair for number<br />

of men employed; drainage was good.<br />

Osceola No. 3.—The ventilation of this mine was in very fair condition,<br />

but there were local defects in drainage. A gasoline pump has<br />

been put in to take the place of mule power.<br />

Hear Run.—The ventilation was in fair condition when the fnmace<br />

was in full operation. Drainage was also fair.<br />

Onion No. 3 Mine.—Ventilation of this mine is not yet complete,<br />

but was in fair condition for the few men employed. I have requested<br />

the company also to complete the manway.<br />

Mountain Branch Mine.— Ventilation fair for the number of men<br />

employed, on last visit, but it did not come under inspection with the<br />

nine men eniplo}ed.<br />

Beaver Nos. 1 and 2.—Are new operations on 15 and C seams of<br />

coal; it is a small concern with only a few men employed. The air<br />

and drainage in fair condition.<br />

Jefferson County Mines.<br />

\Yest Eureka No. 1.—Ventilation and drainage were in good condition.<br />

West Eureka No. 4.—Ventilation in very fair condition but unnecessarily<br />

polluted by constant blasting. Drainage has local defects.<br />

A fire was discovered at. this colliery on Sunday November<br />

25th, 1000, and after several hours of efforts to extinguish it. it was<br />

deemed advisable to seal the mine up, as it was thought by this<br />

means to smother the tire out in a few days, but on opening the<br />

mine on November -'With, it was found that (his had not been successful.<br />

After a week of unceasing fighting of the fire, the work had to<br />

be abandoned, the mine re-sealed and water pumped into it for<br />

the purpose of Hooding the fire district. Up to this date. February<br />

12th, 1001. work has not been resinned, but it is now thought<br />

that the tire is extinguished, and that the mine can again lie put<br />

in working condition. My information ;is to the origin of the<br />

fire is. thai workmen had been engaged for several days prior
