each visit during the year. It is being rapidly exhausted. The<br />

work at present is confined to the extraction of the main entry<br />

pillars.<br />

Maher No. 3.—Is a new drift opening in the Pittsburg seam, located<br />

near Blairsville on the Westmoreland county side of the<br />

Kiskiminetas river. The tipple is erected just across the river on<br />

the Indiana county side. The mine and tipple are connected by an<br />

incline, a fine steel structure, which spans the river at this point.<br />

The condition of the mine was good.<br />

Smith.—Has been in good condition, both as to ventilation and<br />

drainage.<br />

Blacklick.—Is a new drift opening in the Pittsburg seam, located<br />

near Blacklick station, and was in good condition.<br />

Graceton No. 1.—This mine had been abandoned for several years,<br />

but during the present year it was reopened and is now in operation.<br />

Mining machines of the Puncher type have been installed which are<br />

driven by compressed air. The general condition of the mine was<br />

fairly good. The outside improvements consist of a. new tipple,<br />

boiler house, coal crusher, washer and a ventilating fan.<br />

Graceton No. 2.—Was found in a favorable condition on each visit.<br />

Mitchell.—Was in good condition, both as to ventilation and<br />

drainage.<br />

Ray.—Is a new drift<br />

opening in the Pittsburg seam, located east<br />

of Blairsville on the line of the Bolivar branch of the Pennsylvania<br />

Railroad, and was in favorable condition when visited.<br />

An incline several hundred feet in length and of the latest improved<br />

construction has been built and is now in use for lowering<br />

coal from the mine to the tipple below.<br />

Mines on and Near the Southwest Branch of the Pennsylvania<br />

Railroad.<br />

Greensburg No. 1.—In good condition.<br />

Central.—The condition of this mine was good.<br />

Ruff.—This is a new slope opening in the Pittsburg seam, located<br />

near Tarr's station, and was in good condition.<br />

Empire.—The condition of this mine has been fairly good.<br />

Acme.—Was in good condition, both as regards ventilation and<br />

drainage.<br />

No. 1 "A," No. 1 "B" and Nos. 2, 3 and 4.—These mines were in<br />

good condition throughout.
