Ge<strong>org</strong>e Grove was so badly injured March 5th in Jamison mine<br />

No. 1 by a fall of coal, that death resulted in about one and one-half<br />

hours.<br />

John Oartland was so seriously injured March 8th by being caught<br />

between a wagon and coal pillar that death resulted some twenty-six<br />

hours after. He was coming into the shaft bottom with a trip of<br />

two wagons, riding on the front end as usual. Albert Reece, eager,<br />

signalled him to come on as the road was clear, but for some unknown<br />

reason he stepped off the trip in a narrow place and was<br />

caught.<br />

Joseph Wall was so seriously injured March 15th by a fall of slate<br />

that he died the -following day. The accident occurred at the time<br />

Wall was pulling coal down from the face of the roof. 'A piece in<br />

falling struck a slate post, knocking it out and allowing the slate<br />

to fall on him.<br />

Martin Mikulik was instantly killed<br />

March 27th by falling down<br />

the Loyalhanna No. 1 shaft. He was assisting in loading timber<br />

and sending it down the shaft. A wagon loaded with posts was<br />

taken near the shaft and stopped uutil the cage was placed on the<br />

landers, so that the wagon could be placed on the cage. The cage<br />

was brought up the shaft and came to a standstill eight or ten feet<br />

above the landers. Pratto placed the landers in position and<br />

stepped back to signal the engineer to lower the cage. Mikulik at<br />

the same time started the wagon toward the shaft, walking in front<br />

of it. Pratto called to him to stop until the cage was placed on<br />

the landers. He paid no attention to the call. Pratto called several<br />

times but Mikulik did not obey. He continued walking in front of<br />

the wagon and drawing it after him, presumably to get the wagon<br />

as near as possible to the shaft when the cage was finally lowered,<br />

in order to make time, and in so doing lost his balance and fell down<br />

the shaft.<br />

Henry Wagner was so seriously injured on April 9th by being<br />

between a wagon and coal pillar that death resulted while<br />

he was being taken home. He was leading a new horse and while<br />

coming down the entry on the narrow side he accidentally slipped<br />

and fell and was caught.<br />

John Durkin was so seriously injured May 2d, in Alexandria mine,<br />

by a fall of slate that death resulted some eight days after. Durkin<br />

was engaged in setting a post under the slate when it fell ami crushed<br />

him.<br />

Andrew Shadneck was instantly killed on the morning of .May<br />

5th, about four o'clock, in Dorothy mine, by being caught between<br />

an empty mine car and coal pillar.<br />

Shadneck was at work on the night turn in No. 2 entry left. He<br />

went back through a chute to No. 1 entry left, and securing an empty
