By referring to Table A, it will be seen that 2,867 persons lost their<br />

lives inside and 335 outside of the Anthracite mines during the ten<br />

years ending December 31, 1890. In other words, 89.54 per cent,<br />

lost their lives inside, while 10.46 per cent, lost their lives outside<br />

the mines.<br />

Those who lost their lives inside were employed as follows: Foremen<br />

and fire bosses 47, or 1.60 per cent.; miners 1,419, or 49.50 per<br />

cent.; miners' laborers 746, or 26.02 per cent.;<br />

drivers and runners<br />

309, or 10.77 per cent.; door boys 101, or 3.52 per cent.; and all other<br />

employes 245, or 8.55 per cent.<br />

The persons who lost their lives on the surface were employed as<br />

follows: Foremen, 6, or 1.79 per cent.; blacksmiths and carpenters<br />

37, or 11.04 per cent.; engineers and firemen 61, or 18.21 per cent.;<br />

slate pickers 101, or. 30.15 per cent.; all other employes 130, or 38.80<br />

per cent.
