between a mine car and a coal pillar. He was removed to the Westmoreland<br />

hospital at Greensbnrg, where death resulted five days<br />

after.<br />

As the distance from the entrance to the inside workings of this<br />

mine is considerable, the miners are taken in each morning on a<br />

trip of empty mine cars, which inns at a low rate of speed and is<br />

of the trip, noticed that Dabato was making preparations to> get off<br />

before the trip stopped. He called to him to remain on until it was<br />

stopped, but he apparently being in a hurry, paid no attention to<br />

stopped at the different station® by the man in charge to allow the<br />

men to get off. It was on one of these trips that the accident occurred.<br />

As the trip was approaching No. 10 East and West entries,<br />

where Dabato was to get off, William Aukerman, who was in charge<br />

the warning but stepped off in a cut-through and was caught. Thirtytwo<br />

wagons are used on this trip, so that all may have plenty of room.<br />

Frederick Slagle was so seriously injured October 30th by being<br />

struck on the head by a post while drawing timber in pillar workings<br />

that death resulted four days after.<br />

Eli Rubetch was instantly killed November 3d by a fall of slate,<br />

while pulling down coal from face of room after he had fired a blast.<br />

Stephen McGosh was so seriously injured December 1st by beingstruck<br />

by a small piece of slate which fell from the roof that death<br />

resulted eight days after.<br />

This accident was not considered serious,<br />

as he was able to walk some distance from the face of his room,<br />

where it occurred. He also got into a wagon without assistance<br />

and was taken out of the mine.<br />

Salvania Carere was instantly killed December 1th by a fall of<br />

coal at face of room 11 off No. 3 entry.<br />

Guy Weltner, an engineer, in charge of a compressed air locomotive<br />

in United Mine, was instantly killed December 7th by a<br />

loaded runaway mine car colliding with the locomotive on tin 1<br />

main haulage road. The wagon started from a point near room<br />

No. 10 on 22 Butt off face entry, and ran a distance of about 5,000<br />

feet, passing around different curves on its journey, to where it<br />

collided with the engine. The engine was coming up the main<br />

haulage road with a trip of empty cars.<br />

Joserdi Palula. was so seriously injured December 8th by a fall<br />

of roof in the pillar workings that death resulted in four days. He<br />

placed himself on the end of a mine car, which he was loading, and<br />

began to pull down some loose roof, which was directly overhead.<br />

Suddenly the roof gave way, crushing him against the end of the<br />

car. Had he remained at face of pillar where he was shoveling coal<br />

he would have been perfectly safe.<br />

Stephen Kranack was instantly killed December 19th by a fall<br />

of "horseback" roof. This accident occurred in pillar workings, and
