in taking up a 10-inch cast iron pipe line along the main heading,<br />

building fire to melt the lead connections. When leaving work on<br />

Saturday afternoon they thought all fire was safely extinguished,<br />

but some smoldering sparks had been left and the motion of the air<br />

throughout the mine during the night caused by the fan soon fanned<br />

it into a serious flame.<br />

West Eureka No. 5.—Ventilation and drainage were in<br />

very fair<br />

condition, but it is now abandoned, coal having been exhausted.<br />

West Eureka No. 6.—Ventilation and drainage have been kept in<br />

very fair condition. Mine still continues to give off gas and is worked<br />

partly with safety lamps.<br />

West Eureka No. 10.—Air was found defective on last visit in<br />

Jefferson and six North on 9th section, brattice being disarranged<br />

by a creep; there were also some defects in drainage.<br />

West Eureka No. 11.—Ventilation and drainage were in very fair<br />

condition.<br />

West Eureka No. 12.—Was well drained and ventilated, but it<br />

now abandoned, coal having been exhausted.<br />

West Eureka No. 13.—Ventilation and drainage were in very fair<br />

condition.<br />

Conrad No. 1.—Is a new operation and in the early part of the year<br />

was poorly ventilated, but with shaft put down and a furnace built,<br />

the ventilation is in a good condition. The same can be said of<br />

drainage.<br />

Sheller No. 3 Mine.—Is a new operation and everything has been<br />

put in, with a view to good ventilation and drainage. Fan engine<br />

14x24x75 horse power with a Capel fan 7 ft. x 9 ft. and double inlets.<br />

Penn No. 2.—The ventilation of this mine is defective. It needs a<br />

new shaft, and a furnace built, which I have requested them to have<br />

done. The drainage is in fair condition.<br />

Canoe Ridge.—Three new drift openings on Canoe Creek with electric<br />

and tail-rope haulage and compressed air mining machine, and a<br />

Stine fan for temporary ventilation. Mine was still under construction<br />

on my last visit, and promises to be a first class operation.<br />
