During the ten years from 1891 to <strong>1900</strong> 1,785 lives were lost in and<br />

about the Bituminous mines, of which 1,740 or 97.45 per cent, occurred<br />

inside and 45 or 2.55 per cent., outside.<br />

Of the fatalities that occurred inside the mines, 1,139 or 63.81 per<br />

cent, were by falls of coal, slate, roof, etc.; 276 or 15.46 per cent, by<br />

mine cars; 182 or 10.19 per cent, by explosions of gas; 43 or 2.41 percent,<br />

by explosions of powder and blasts; 18 or 1.01 per cent, by<br />

falling into shafts; 17 or 1 per cent, by suffocation, and 34 or 1.34<br />

per cent, were from miscellaneous causes.<br />

There were 45 fatalities outside the mines, of which 22 or 48.88<br />

per cent, were by cars in various ways; 8 or 17.78 per cent, by machinery;<br />

7 or 15.55 per cent, by explosions of boilers, and 8 or 17.88<br />

per cent, from miscellaneous causes.<br />
