Jamison No. •">.— Is a new shaft, opening to the Pittsburg scam.<br />

The coke ovens and other improvements arc now in course of construction,<br />

and will be of the most improved type.<br />

Donohoe. Is a new drift opening in the Pittsburg scam. The outside<br />

improvements consists of ll!» coke ovens, a coal crusher and<br />

washer. A large ventilating fan of the Capell type is being erected<br />

to furnish ventilation necessary tor the operation of the mine.<br />

Salem. Is a mw drift opening in the Pittsburg scam and when<br />

visited was in a favorable condition. A new tipple of the latest<br />

improved type was in course of construction, .ts were also a number<br />

of coke os ens.<br />

Mines on and Near the Unity<br />

Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad.<br />

Dorothy.— Is a new shaft opening to the Pittsburg seam. The inside<br />

workings were in good condition, both in regard to ventilation<br />

and drainage. The outside improvements consist of a number<br />

of coke ovens, together with the necessary railroad sidings<br />

and the latest improved machinery for the operation of the entire<br />

plant.<br />

Puritan.—Has been in good condition on each visit, both in regard<br />

to<br />

ventilation and drainage.<br />

Hostetter and Whitney.—Were in good condition each visit, both<br />

as to<br />

ventilation and drainage.<br />

S. II. Smith.— Is a small mine located on the Ligonier Valley Kail<br />

road near Latrobe, and it has been in fairly good condition during<br />

t he year.<br />

Mines on and Near the Indiana Branch of the Western Pennsylvania<br />

Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad.<br />

Isabella.—This mine was in fairly good condition throughout the<br />

year. A sudden cave-in occurred on December 1st, about L.30 1'. M.<br />

An area of about forty acres, principally old workings, was affected.<br />

Small stumps of coal had been left in this part of the mine to sup<br />

port the surface and prevent a cave-in which proved to be insufficient,<br />

but no accident to human life or serious injury to property<br />

resulted therefrom. Explosive j;;is was discovered in this mine during<br />

the year.<br />

Burrell Nos. 1 and 2.— Were in good condition. Ventilation and<br />

drainage good.<br />

Graff.— Its condition was fairly good., except ventilation, which<br />

had not received the attention it should with reference to the distribution<br />

of air throughout the workings.<br />
