Work published by Franzen and Meyer (2010) in the European SociologicalReview, based on two waves of ISSP data, suggests that environmental concern is significantly greater inwealthier sociees, and among wealthier people within a given society. This paper challenges both of theseclaims, using data from the European and World Values Surveys, which together cover a larger sample ofcountries and, for some quesons, a longer period of me. The paper disnguishes between people’s concernsabout local environmental problems, global environmental problems, and their overall willingness topay for environmental protecon.
