Obtaining a valid and reliable SES indicator is crical to the study of educaonalinequalies within- and between-countries, as they are related to the SES. The SES indicator can help us understandhow inequalies related to SES are configured and can be reduced. The proposed indicator is a compositeof parental educaon, parental occupaonal status, home possessions, and family financial status variables.The theorecal model underlying the SES derived indicator is discussed. The reliability and validity of SES is assessedwith exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The cross-cultural comparability of SES is evaluatedwith measurement invariance tests across countries.
