Concretely, it concerns the implementation of pilot actions:• Combination of mobile appliances (PDAs, “intelligent” telephones) and position services (GPS) forthe prolongation of the visitors’ stay in a city or region. The central idea is the use of pre-storedinformation of personal interests in the mobile appliance. Based to such elements, while thetourist wanders in a region, he is informed for points those likely interests him (e.g. museums,monuments), he is guided to them and he accepts help about the planning of the way that he willfollow. Example of such application is the ABEL solution that is used in the region of TwenteHolland (http://www.uitmetabel.nl/).• Combination of mobile appliances and position services for the support of the nature’s tourism, asan example in parks and protected regions. Example of suchapplication is the mobile driver on nature lovers called WebPark – product of an inquiringcollaboration concerning a project that is part-financed from the European Union(http://www.webparkservices.info/index.htm)• The use of geo-coded information in combination with methods of virtual reality (virtual geomultimediainformation systems) for the promotion of rural regions, and in general of ecologicaltourism. The user can make three-dimensional (3D) virtual “flights” (virtual flyers) in a region,from his PC, seeking information on lodgings and routes for cycling via his PDA as soon as hearrive at his destination, and see the results in three-dimensional chart etc. Such application is thesolution that was implemented in a project part-financed from the European Union REGEO(http://thayatal.geo-konzept.de/z/regeo).The objective of the project is the application of the previous actions in a pilot region, in order profitsand costs, problems and critical factors of success to be elected. The stages of the project includeplanning, pilot application, evaluation, conclusions and proposals for the continuity.
