An Unhealthy AmericaMilken InstituteCOLON CANCERColon cancer rates remain heavily dependent upon secondary risk factors, such as diet and smoking. When combinedwith an aging demographic, data trends suggest that the distribution of colon cancer rates will continue to affect statesin a pattern very similar to the one presented by the 2003 data. All states show an increase in their relative PRC shares ofpopulation under the baseline projection, but only three states, Wyoming, Alaska, and New Mexico, show increasesunder the optimistic projection. In both the baseline and optimistic scenarios, Alaska shows the largest increase in PRC share of population, rising from8 th in the 2003 baseline and optimistic to 2 nd in 2023 PRC share in both scenarios. By per capita expenditures in thesecond table, Alaska and Wyoming rank highest.Projected Colon Cancer PRCProjected Colon Cancer PRC - Percentage of Population, 2023Percentage of Population, 2023Top Five States Baseline Optimistic Expenditures Bottom Five PRC* States Expenditures/PRCBaseline OptimisticWyoming Disease 0.202 0.167 (Billions) Kansas(Millions)(Thousands) 0.098 0.081Alaska Cancer 0.178 0.147 48.1 Minnesota 10.6 0.102 4.50.084West Virginia Breast Cancer 0.169 0.139 5.5 Wisconsin 1.1 0.104 4.80.085Louisiana Colon Cancer 0.166 0.137 3.9Missouri 0.3 0.104 11.50.086Hawaii Lung Cancer 0.161 0.133 6.3Michigan 0.4 0.105 17.10.086Prostate Cancer 4.3 1.0 4.1Source: Milken InstituteOther Cancers 28.0 7.7 3.6Pulmonary Conditions Projected Expenditure 45.2 for Colon 49.2Cancer0.9DiabetesProjected Expenditure for Per 27.1 Colon Capita, Cancer 2023 13.7 - Per Capita, 2023 2.0Hypertension 32.5 36.8 0.9Top Five States Heart Disease Baseline Optimistic Expenditures64.7 Bottom Five PRC*19.2States Expenditures/PRCBaseline 3.4 OptimisticAlaska Stroke 73.2 53.2 13.6 Michigan 2.4 21.6 5.616.3Disease(Billions) (Millions) (Thousands)Wyoming Mental Disorders 53.2 38.9 45.8 Kansas 30.3 22.3 1.516.6Cancer 48.1 10.6 4.5Delaware Total 46.9 34.3 277.0 Connecticut 162.2 24.7 1.718.8Breast Cancer 5.5 1.1 4.8Kentucky PRC: Population 45.5 Reporting Condition 33.5 Illinois 25.3 19.1Colon Cancer 3.9 0.3 11.5Nevada 45.0 32.1 New Jersey 25.6 19.3Lung Cancer 6.3 0.4 17.1Source: Milken InstituteProstate Cancer 4.3 1.0 4.1Other Cancers 28.0 7.7 3.6Pulmonary Conditions 45.2 49.2 0.9Diabetes 27.1 13.7 2.0Hypertension 32.5 36.8 0.9Heart Disease 64.7 19.2 3.4Stroke 13.6 2.4 5.6Mental Disorders 45.8 30.3 1.5Total 277.0 162.2 1.7PRC: Population Reporting Condition[ 117 ]
