<strong>An</strong> <strong>Unhealthy</strong> <strong>America</strong><strong>Milken</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in economics at the University <strong>of</strong> Southern Indiana. She has also served as a member <strong>of</strong>the team for funded research projects with the New York State Office <strong>of</strong> Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.She received a Ph.D. in economics from the State University <strong>of</strong> New York, Albany, a master’s degree from the DelhiSchool <strong>of</strong> <strong>Economic</strong>s, and a bachelor’s degree from Jadavpur University, India.In Kyu Kim is a Senior Research <strong>An</strong>alyst at the Center for Health <strong>Economic</strong>s under the Regional <strong>Economic</strong>s group.His research focuses on health economics, labor economics and demography. Prior to joining the <strong>Institute</strong>, heworked at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under a Prevention Effectiveness Fellowship,focusing on training and applications to public health, epidemiologic models and economic evaluation methods.Kim received his Ph.D. in economics from the Graduate Center <strong>of</strong> the City University <strong>of</strong> New York (CUNY), with afocus on obesity. He received a bachelor’s degree in international trade from Kookmin University and a master’sdegree in economics from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea.Soojung Kim is a Research <strong>An</strong>alyst in the Regional <strong>Economic</strong>s group at the <strong>Institute</strong>. Her research interests includeregional economics, economic development and infrastructure. Her expertise covers econometric modeling,transportation network analysis, and GIS applications. Kim has participated in research projects on national andregional economic impact analysis, applying Input-Output models and other econometrics models. Kim hascontributed to the <strong>Institute</strong>’s Best Performing Cities Index and its Cost <strong>of</strong> Doing Business Index. Prior to her graduatestudy at the University <strong>of</strong> Southern California, she was a transportation researcher at the Seoul Development<strong>Institute</strong>. Kim received her Ph.D. in urban planning from the University <strong>of</strong> Southern California. She received abachelor’s degree from Yonsei University and a master’s degree in city planning from Seoul National University in Korea.Kevin Klowden is a Managing Economist in Regional <strong>Economic</strong>s at the <strong>Milken</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, specializing in the study<strong>of</strong> demographic and spatial factors, and how these are influenced by public policy and affect regional economies.He has an interest in the role <strong>of</strong> transportation infrastructure as it relates to the movement <strong>of</strong> goods and people inthe development <strong>of</strong> regional competitiveness. He coordinated the <strong>Institute</strong>’s Los <strong>An</strong>geles Economy Project, seekingpublic policy and private-sector solutions to challenges the region faces amid a growing unskilled labor pool.He served on the editorial board <strong>of</strong> Millennium, the international affairs journal <strong>of</strong> the London School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Economic</strong>s,where he earned a master’s degree in the politics <strong>of</strong> world economy. Klowden also earned a master’s in economicgeography, from the University <strong>of</strong> Chicago.[ 238 ]
