An Unhealthy AmericaMilken InstituteSTROKERisk for stroke depends not only of the avoidable and unavoidable factors but also on the level of treatment. NorthDakota, for example, which shows the highest disease rate, doesn’t rank among the top states for obesity, but it has thehighest percentage of population considered “overweight” (39.2 percent). As noted previously, rural areas often reportlower rates of stroke, but also lower treatment rates. Non-Hispanic whites are at higher risk. This may also help explainthe high stroke rates in North Dakota and Iowa. Meanwhile, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania also rank amongthe top five for heart disease and report high cholesterol rates. Four of the five states with the lowest stroke levels alsoare among the five with lowest levels of hypertension.Stroke Population Reporting ConditionStroke Population Reporting Condition - As Percentage of Population, 2003As Percentage of Population, 2003Top Five States Percent ExpendituresBottom PRC* Five StatesExpenditures/PRCPercentNorth Dakota Disease1.23 (Billions) Alaska(Millions)(Thousands) 0.39ArkansasCancer 1.18 48.1 Utah 10.6 4.5 0.50Iowa Breast Cancer 1.16 5.5 Colorado 1.1 4.8 0.54West VirginiaColon Cancer1.113.9New Mexico0.3 11.50.56Pennsylvania 1.09 Arizona 0.59Lung Cancer 6.3 0.4 17.1Sources: MEPS, Milken InstituteProstate Cancer 4.3 1.0 4.1Other Cancers 28.0 7.7 3.6Pulmonary Conditions 45.2 49.2 0.9Diabetes 27.1 13.7 2.0Hypertension Population Reporting 32.5Stroke - Per 36.8 Capita, 2003 0.9Heart Disease 64.7 19.2 3.4Stroke 13.6 2.4 5.6Mental DisordersExpenditures45.8PRC*30.3Expenditures/PRC1.5Disease Total (Billions) 277.0 (Millions) 162.2 (Thousands) 1.7Cancer 48.1 10.6 4.5PRC: Population Reporting ConditionBreast Cancer 5.5 1.1 4.8Colon Cancer 3.9 0.3 11.5Lung Cancer 6.3 0.4 17.1Prostate Cancer 4.3 1.0 4.1Other Cancers 28.0 7.7 3.6Pulmonary Conditions 45.2 49.2 0.9Diabetes 27.1 13.7 2.0Hypertension 32.5 36.8 0.9Heart Disease 64.7 19.2 3.4Stroke 13.6 2.4 5.6Mental Disorders 45.8 30.3 1.5Total 277.0 162.2 1.7PRC: Population Reporting ConditionLowestThird TierSecond TierHighest[ 66 ]
