<strong>An</strong> <strong>Unhealthy</strong> <strong>America</strong><strong>Milken</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>StrokeStroke PRC share <strong>of</strong> population in the 2023 projections continues to show significant geographic overlap withhypertension rates. <strong>The</strong> states with high stroke PRC percentage <strong>of</strong> population in 2023 are very similar to those in the2003 data, with the exception <strong>of</strong> Maine, which rises from 14 th in the 2003 data to 4 th in the 2023 projections. Pennsylvaniadrops from 5 th in 2003 to 7 th in 2023. Among the states in the lower tiers, there are no significant changes, with thebottom ten matching for both 2003 and 2023, albeit in a slightly changed order.In the baseline projections, all states show increased PRC share, with the most dramatic increases belonging to NorthDakota (from 1.23 percent to 1.49 percent), Maine (0.99 percent to 1.24 percent), and Montana (0.86 percent to 1.11percent). In the optimistic projection, only Maine (4 th ), Montana (13 th ), Vermont (19 th ), Wyoming (21 st ), New Hampshire(38 th ), New Mexico (43 rd ), and Alaska (49 th ) show increases in PRC shares.
