Manley (Rowan University)Creating opportunities for outsiders to gain Quechua language accessThis talk details the presenter’s efforts to grant Quechua language access to outsiders, t<strong>here</strong>by supporting an increase in thegeneral public awareness and maintenance <strong>of</strong> Quechua. More specifically, the presenter has taught basic Cuzco Quechualanguage within the context <strong>of</strong> two interdisciplinary, university-level courses, organized two campus visits by Andes Manta, anEcuadorian indigenous music ensemble, and is engaged in the creation <strong>of</strong> online Quechua language resources within the Museum<strong>of</strong> Anthropology at Rowan University (MARU). During the fall <strong>of</strong> 2005, 2008 and 2010, the presenter taught basic Quechua in“<strong>Linguistic</strong>s and Cultures <strong>of</strong> Native South <strong>America</strong>”. Also, during spring 2007 and fall 2012, the presenter taught basic Quechuain “Modern Descendants <strong>of</strong> the Incas: Quechua Language, Culture and History”. The presenter’s work-in-progress, incollaboration with MARU, includes the presentation <strong>of</strong> Quechua vocabulary and grammar with automatically-graded activitiesand audio and video that include authentic pronunciation and indigenous music.108
