| Chamber in Review 活 動 重 溫 |Airport Authority’s Green Retailing in Action機 管 局 的 綠 色 零 售 管 理The Chamber visited the Airport Authority on May 15to learn how it is working with tenants to make HongKong International Airport the world’s greenest airport.HKIA’s goal is to reduce airport-wide carbon emissionsby 25% by 2015, based on 2008 emission levels.Martin Putnam, manager for Business Continuity &Environmental at the airport, explained that air conditioningis responsible for around half of all electricity usage atthe airport, followed by lighting. To reduce energy consumption, the airport is encouraging tenants to switch toenergy efficient LED lights, and minimize lighting usageoutside of business hours. As a result, many shops and restaurantsat the airport now have two main light switches:one for normal business hours; one for restocking andcleaning hours.Refuse is also being tackled by working with vendors tosend goods to retailers in reusable plastic containers, ratherthan cardboard boxes wrapped in plastic sheeting. Foodwaste is also starting to be sorted by training wait-staff atthe food and beverage outlets to collect leftovers in containers, which is then later turned into compost. He saidprogress is being made in all areas, but it requires continualtraining and encouragement of all parties involved to makeheadway.Representatives from Pizza Express, Muji, and Nuance-Watson shared their experiences with members in minimizingenergy usage, refuse waste, and eliminating waste, particularly packaging, at source.78 June 2012 The Bulletin 工 商 月 刊
