• Development of an integrated care demonstration model in Dundalk, primarily a 16unit pilot ‘aware’ homes project called Great Northern Haven;• To build capability through evidence development, innovation, awareness andcontinuous process improvement;• To grow the project’s reach and impact through geographic expansion, serviceintensification, advocacy and public policy development;• To develop a sustainable business model <strong>for</strong> continued growth.8.38 It is hoped that the outputs will help influence the quality of new housing provision,the adaptation of existing homes <strong>for</strong> ageing-in-place and the more effective, joined-up,organisation and delivery of services to older people in their homes. The models shouldalso be expandable to other target groups such as those <strong>with</strong> physical or intellectualdisabilities.8.39 <strong>People</strong> <strong>with</strong> disabilities can apply <strong>for</strong> grant aid under the <strong>Housing</strong> Adaptation GrantSchemes to fund the installation of assistive technology to help them live independently.The increasing promotion of the use of technology in this regard should be considered infuture policy development.8.40 The case study below is an example of an application of assistive technology fromNewgrove <strong>Housing</strong> Association, which is a member of the ICSH, providing housing andsupports <strong>for</strong> people <strong>with</strong> disabilities to live independently in the community.Case Study 8.2: Newgrove <strong>Housing</strong> AssociationIn a number of locations where Newgrove <strong>Housing</strong> Association has provided supportedaccommodation services through the community housing model, semi independentapartments have been designed and constructed adjacent to the property. The apartmentsare designed <strong>with</strong> a link door between the main house however the apartment also has itsown front door. The link door <strong>with</strong> the main house can only be opened should the tenanthave a crisis or in the event of an emergency whereby support staff need to gain access tothe apartment. Each apartment is fitted <strong>with</strong> a nurse call system that has a point in eachbedroom which is linked back to the main house. In addition, intruder and fire alarmsystems include external monitoring should the need arise.These apartments are designed to lifetime adaptable homes standards in that they aresustainable <strong>for</strong> peoples’ changing needs.
