Washington Street On-Road Bicycle Facility TransitAdditional Considerations for Bicycle and Pedestrian ImprovementsThe study area has a relatively rich network of on- and off-street bicycle and pedestrianaccommodations. The Custis Trail is one of the most heavily used trails in the Washington,D.C. region for commuters, as evidenced by the bicycle count data shown in the existing conditionssection of this study. An enhanced sidepath along U.S. 50/Arlington Boulevard linkingthe City of Fairfax to the Rosslyn Ballston corridor in Arlington County could provide similarfunctionality for travelers coming from the south. Furthermore, Fairfax County is exploring thepossibility of extending the Custis Trail west along I-66, which could considerably expand thecatchment area and ridership for this important and heavily used trail system.Care must be exercised to ensure that any improvements to any aspect of the transportationsystem consider the impacts to bicycle and pedestrian accommodation. For example, adding athird lane to I-66 may mean that at least some sections of the Custis Trail must be rebuilt at thesame grade as the roadway for right-of-way and slope reasons. This may ameliorate some ofthe topographical challenges presented by the current trail alignment as the reconstructed trail3-96 I-66 Multimodal Study
