NE60C This course enables students to syn<strong>the</strong>-<br />
size evidence-based knowledge and learning from<br />
previous nursing courses into practice. The student<br />
consolidates his or her practice experiences through<br />
independent and interdependent practice under preceptorship<br />
in <strong>the</strong> prospective working environment<br />
(or as near as possible) with regular ongoing monitoring,<br />
supervision and guidance. This practicum<br />
concludes with a one (1) week review by <strong>the</strong> preceptor<br />
where <strong>the</strong> student is engaged in oral and written<br />
presentations, self and programme evaluation and<br />
exit interview.<br />
NE60D This course exposes students to concepts,<br />
scientific bases and <strong>the</strong>oretical constructs that underpin<br />
clinical nurse specialization; explores current<br />
issues related to advanced nursing practice;<br />
differentiates among advanced nursing practices;<br />
and assist in linking organizational instruments to<br />
clinical nursing operations. It challenges students<br />
to engage in critical thinking, use <strong>of</strong> evidence-based<br />
practice and in using <strong>the</strong> nursing process effectively<br />
as <strong>the</strong> modality <strong>of</strong> problem solving and bases for<br />
clinical judgment in nursing practice. It also builds<br />
on <strong>the</strong> clinical and management skills <strong>of</strong> students<br />
by exposing <strong>the</strong>m to complex patient care situations<br />
and human resources management strategies required<br />
for making quality decisions. In this course<br />
caring and effective interpersonal relationships are<br />
incorporated into patient care delivery and interpersonal<br />
relationships with emphasis on <strong>the</strong> communication<br />
process between nurse and patient and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
health team members.<br />
NE61A The course engages graduate students in<br />
a discussion forum that enables critical thinking <strong>the</strong><br />
application <strong>of</strong> evidence-based knowledge <strong>of</strong> basic<br />
brain biology as a basis for understanding mental<br />
health disorders, brain technology and psychopharmacology.<br />
The course focuses on neuro-anatomy,<br />
genetic/familial correlates, systems <strong>of</strong> neuro-regulation,<br />
psycho- endocrinology, psycho-immuno- logy,<br />
normal biological rhythms, psycho-biological dysfunctions,<br />
biological <strong>the</strong>ories <strong>of</strong> major psychiatric<br />
disorders, brain imaging and diagnosing <strong>of</strong> mental<br />
illness and physiological indices <strong>of</strong> mental health<br />
and illnesses.<br />
NE61B This course exposes graduate students to<br />
evidence-based knowledge in pathopsychology and<br />
empowers <strong>the</strong>m to be effective in caring for persons<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> life cycle and along <strong>the</strong> wellness-illness<br />
continuum. Students are guided in using critical<br />
thinking and sound clinical judgment in interpreting<br />
psychopathological findings in making differential diagnosis<br />
and selecting appropriate treatment modalities.<br />
The course familiarizes students with research<br />
based evidence based on etiological <strong>the</strong>ories including<br />
organic, familial, interpersonal and psycho-social<br />
perspectives. It seeks to develop <strong>the</strong> skills <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
student in recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various factors that influence<br />
<strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> psychopathology.<br />
NE61C Students will be enabled to develop a<br />
deeper and broader understanding <strong>of</strong> normal body<br />
functioning, system integration, common recurrent<br />
deviations and <strong>the</strong>ir pathophysiological manifestations,<br />
investigative measures, pharmacological as<br />
