Introduces <strong>the</strong> student to <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> Adult<br />
Education .The features <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> constructivist <strong>the</strong>ory<br />
<strong>of</strong> education are examined and applied to problem-based<br />
learning. Each student assesses his/her<br />
learning style and develops a learning contract.<br />
FMMS6801 Epidemiology and Evidence Based<br />
Medicine<br />
Presents <strong>the</strong> tenets <strong>of</strong> Evidence Based Medicine<br />
and its application to everyday practice. The role<br />
that epidemiology plays in determining healthrelated<br />
events is examined. Students are exposed to <strong>the</strong> appropriate<br />
steps in clinical decision making.<br />
FMMS6200 The Consultation and Communication<br />
The elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> medical consultation and <strong>the</strong><br />
importance <strong>of</strong> proper communication techniques are<br />
presented. The seven communication transforming<br />
principles <strong>of</strong> Roter and Hall are examined and <strong>the</strong><br />
relevance <strong>of</strong> communication to Family Medicine examined.<br />
FMMS6700 Doctor-Patient Relationship / Ethics<br />
The different types <strong>of</strong> Doctor-Patient Relationships<br />
and <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> Ethics in <strong>Medical</strong> Practice are<br />
presented. Important virtues <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Family Physician<br />
and various examples <strong>of</strong> contemporary ethical is-<br />
sues are discussed.<br />
FMMS6400 Health Promotion, Screening and Risk<br />
Assessment<br />
Health Promotion Concepts, Rationale and Strategies<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir application to Family Medicine Practice<br />
are examined. The student is exposed to models<br />
<strong>of</strong> health behaviour change and <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> equipping<br />
individuals with skills as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> health promotion<br />
process.<br />
Chronic Diseases in Primary Care<br />
The common chronic diseases in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean-<strong>the</strong>ir<br />
assessment and management in Family Medicine<br />
Practice are explored. Special emphasis is placed<br />
on <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> obesity, hypertension and diabetes<br />
and <strong>the</strong> skills needed to assess and manage<br />
<strong>the</strong>se in a holistic way are examined. The student is<br />
introduced to <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> protocols and guidelines in<br />
<strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> Chronic Diseases.<br />
FMMS6600 Sexuality and STDs<br />
The student explores techniques for discussing human<br />
sexuality with his/her patients and diagnosing<br />
and treating sexual problems. The diagnosing and<br />
management <strong>of</strong> sexually transmitted diseases including<br />
HIV are also discussed.<br />
FMMS6500 Child and Adolescent Health<br />
Important elements <strong>of</strong> child and adolescent care relevant<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Family Physician are discussed. Areas<br />
