NE64A This course is practice based and introduc-<br />

es students to nursing and health information systems<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Caribbean and global perspectives.<br />

The use <strong>of</strong> standardized nursing languages in <strong>the</strong><br />

information age is critically analyzed in <strong>the</strong> context<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caribbean and in relation to functional and<br />

clinical nursing practice also nursing research. It is<br />

designed to assist postgraduate students to think<br />

critically in selecting information systems for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

practice and in using evidence-based information to<br />

decision-making in nursing practice and research.<br />

It builds on experiences in learners areas <strong>of</strong> nursing<br />

specializations. The course addresses current<br />

issues and practices in information management<br />

systems. It also exposes students to <strong>the</strong> capabilities<br />

and usage <strong>of</strong> information systems and networks and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir use in nursing practice. Learners are guided<br />

through laboratory practice sessions to be adept<br />

in intranet/internet navigation and database development<br />

and usage. Throughout <strong>the</strong> course issues<br />

related to copyright, legal and ethical issues pertaining<br />

to information, knowledge and technology usage<br />

and application to nursing practice are explored.<br />

NE65A This course focuses postgraduate students<br />

on <strong>the</strong> processes and strategies <strong>of</strong> policy formulation,<br />

implementation and evaluation in nursing and<br />

health care practice. It explores <strong>the</strong> trends, projections,<br />

legal and ethical issues inherent in <strong>the</strong> policy<br />

process. It assists students to become familiar with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir roles in <strong>the</strong> policy process and <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong><br />

policy on <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> individuals throughout <strong>the</strong> life<br />

cycle and along <strong>the</strong> wellness illness continuum. Students<br />

are enabled to think critically on <strong>the</strong> implica-<br />

tions <strong>of</strong> national policies on health care financing<br />

and <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> health care delivery and nursing<br />

practice.<br />

NE66A The course enables nurses to be familiar<br />

with <strong>the</strong> concepts, principles and methods <strong>of</strong> health<br />

education and health promotion and <strong>the</strong>ir use in promoting<br />

physical and mental health to persons along<br />

<strong>the</strong> wellness-illness continuum and throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

life span. Emphasis is placed on integration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Caribbean Charter for Health Promotion and evidence-based<br />

information in designing programmes<br />

and activities in nursing practice. The course requires<br />

learners to apply ethical principles, critical<br />

thinking and effective interpersonal relationships<br />

in designing, promoting and implementing patient<br />

physical and mental health messages.<br />

NE67A This course analyses management <strong>the</strong>o-<br />

ries, organizational practices and techniques with<br />

a view <strong>of</strong> devising problem-solving strategies to resolve<br />

organizational issues and problems in nursing<br />

administration. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking,<br />

evidenced based nursing practice and ways to<br />

incorporate effective interpersonal relations in delivering<br />

quality management for nursing organizational<br />

and clinical effectiveness.<br />

NE67B This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> evo-<br />

lution <strong>of</strong> Caribbean health care delivery systems including<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir organizational structure, financing system<br />

and models <strong>of</strong> health care delivery. Comparison<br />

is made with international health and nursing care<br />

models, and <strong>the</strong>ir relevance to health care delivery<br />
