Course OG60A: An Introduction to Individual<br />

Counselling<br />

This course is designed to introduce participants<br />

to <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> counselling by clarifying terminology,<br />

examining research findings on <strong>the</strong> effectiveness<br />

<strong>of</strong> counselling and counsellors, discussing <strong>the</strong> principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> counselling, providing an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

counselling process and relating <strong>the</strong>se to <strong>the</strong> participants<br />

awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong>ir motives and<br />

needs in choosing Counselling as a career. The<br />

course continues by providing participants with an<br />

overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal schools <strong>of</strong> counselling as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y emerged chronologically and <strong>the</strong>n provides<br />

an in-depth look at counselling skills with particular<br />

reference to <strong>the</strong> counselling <strong>of</strong> individuals. The limitations<br />

<strong>of</strong> a skills approach to counselling are also<br />

explored. The course ends with an examination <strong>of</strong><br />

some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> concerns <strong>of</strong> trainee counsellors as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

consider <strong>the</strong> counselling process and <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

supervisor.<br />
